Kelley Drye litigation partner Robert S. Friedman and bankruptcy partner Eric R. Wilson have been selected as winners of the 2008 Burton Awards for Legal Achievement, considered one of the highest literary honors in law. Mr. Friedman and Mr. Wilson will receive the award for their article "The Legal Fallout from the Subprime Crisis" published in the May 2007 issue of The Banking Law Journal.

This annual award is organized in association with the Library of Congress and its Law Library and recognizes only 30 winners from multiple submissions from the top 1000 law firms in the United States.

The ceremony was held in the Great Hall of the Library of Congress on June 16, 2008. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Steven Gerald Breyer was the guest speaker, in a presentation covered by C-Span. Veteran journalist Bill Press served as the master of ceremonies.

Mr. Friedman and Mr. Wilson's article addressed the relationships involved in the subprime mortgage industry and explored how the issues would be resolved in courts and bankruptcy proceedings.

The Burton Awards are funded by the Burton Foundation, a non-profit, academic effort, devoted to recognizing and rewarding excellence in the legal profession. The program focuses on the refinement and enrichment of legal writing. The entries are judged by an academic board led by Virginia Wise, a renowned teacher at Harvard Law School, Anne E. Kringel, a widely acknowledged expert in legal writing at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Grace Tonner, a prominent professor from the University of Michigan Law School, Judge Ed Forstenzer, a distinguished judge from California's Superior Court, and William Ryan, a descendent of Noah Webster.

Rob and Eric are pictured with Dennis Smith, who serves on the Burton Foundation board of directors. Mr. Smith is a former senator in the Missouri legislature.
